Apocalypse 6th Street
I was working on a load in for a show at the Bass Concert Hall when it began percolating through the stage hands that the city and SXSW had made the decision to cancel SXSW 2020. SXSW is how a lot of artists and technicians in Austin make a good chunk of their income for the year, so almost everyone there was seeing work evaporate in front of their eyes. This was when the pandemic started becoming real for us.
By the end of the week, the show we’d been working on had run for two performances and been shut down. People in general were starting to feel the first small impacts of the pandemic, but artists were experiencing immediate and drastic impacts to their livelihood. Taking my phone downtown, on what would have been the final Friday of SXSW, I wanted to show my community what was happening, documenting a boarded up ghost town which should have been one of the biggest nights of the year for the entertainment district.
